June, 2001 - Volume 98, Number 10

Special Meeting, June 14, CPRO Plans

The newest drawings and plans for the Columbia Pike Revitalization project will be presented to BSCL members by Arlington County Planning Department Staff. These plans will specifically address the section of Columbia Pike that borders Barcroft. Our input is sought at this juncture. Over the summer several area wide meetings will be scheduled by the County and they plan to present their plans to the County Board in early Fall. The area under discussion is S. Highland Street west to the County line at S. Jefferson Street and includes the intersections ("nodes" or "development pods") of the Pike and S. George Mason Drive, the Pike and S. Buchanan and the site of the Arlington Mill Center.

We will vote on two items. Item 1 -- vote to approve funds to repair over the summer the floor surface at the Community House with a long lasting finish at a price not to exceed $2500 and. Item 2 -- vote to approve an up to a $2,500 expenditure to build a much needed storage shed for the yard. Lori Fitchell has pictures of the proposed shed available.

Attention, attention!

Calling all Barcroft Boys and Girls, adults of every age, musical instrument players, patriots, pranksters, dancers, lion tamers, fire engines, police motorcycles, antique car owners, bicyclists, scooterists, float makers, precision lawn mowing teams, dragons, and general parade marching population.....

Annual 4th of July Parade!

Come and march or come and watch. Build a float! Perform! Anyone can join in the fun. The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. sharp on the 4th of July. Start and finish will be at the community house. Join in! There will also be 45 minute show of standup comedy, mind reading and magical entertainment to amaze grownups and kids after the parade and during the picnic. Please call Parade Chairman Andrew Hunter at 703-979-8247 if you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help make this celebration one of Barcroft's more memorable events. I am especially in need of a volunteer to take over BBQ duties. If you wish to be in the venerable Barcroft marching band please contact band leader Jack Turner at 703-892-6512 (or you could form your own ensemble!), and as always feel free to bring a side dish or dessert.

Tom Sawyer Day

Tom Sawyer got his fence whitewashed in a jiffy by persuading everyone who passed by what fun it would be. We're making the same pitch for volunteers to help whitewash, uh, that is, paint the community house. Actually, we're just planning to touch up some of the peeling sections to tide things over until we raise the cash to hire a major scrape-down and repaint sometime next year. Have an afternoon to spare to help out? Call Volunteer Coordinator Scott Royal at 703-892-5566, or e-mail him at royal@rti.org. Date will be chosen based on when volunteers are available. Join in the fun.

Traffic Calming

By the June 14 meeting, BSCL will know whether or not Traffic Calming efforts can begin for Buchanan and Wakefield. If we make it and you have ideas about Barcroft traffic management, join the Working Group!

For more recent developments on this subject, see our Calendar Page.

Stay Informed!

With so many vital issues facing the Barcroft neighborhood at this juncture , it is imperative that we stay in touch this summer so we can continue to follow up with County Board Members and staff. Please give us your e-mail address. There are two forums you can sign up for. One is an announcements only forum where you will receive only information posted by the BSCL Board such as meeting announcements and official documents for comment. The other forum is much more informal and encourages an exchange between neighbors -- it is a chat group where such topics as best DSL provider, good plumbers or nannies, traffic woes, etc. are bandied about. Contact our wonderful website at www.bscl.org to sign up. Tended by randy@bscl.org, it contains much information including current documents and newsletters. Peruse and comment! Our monthly newsletter and occasional flyers are still distributed by a vital corps of volunteers to each home in Barcroft. If you will be out of town and are having your other mail and newspapers held, please call Pat Williamson at 703-521-1082. We will pass the word NOT to leave anything on your doorsteps for the specified period of time.

Congratulations to the new officers, and thanks to those who have served!

From the President

It is with great enthusiasm that the newly elected BSCL officers assume their duties. With a really terrific hand-off from our predecessors we hope to hit the ground running to keep Barcroft affairs on the radar screens of County Board members and staff.

Following up on the April 28 Walking Town Meeting several topics emerged as hot button issues -- check out the www.bscl.org and click on Priorities. Committees exist for a number of these issues and the Committee Chairpersons would love to hear from interested volunteers. Check out the updated listing of Officers and Chairpersons in this newsletter.

Barcroft marchers proudly represented our community in the Arlington County Neighborhood Day Parade on May 12. With the safety patrols (and their Marine buddies!) from Barcroft Elementary School at the lead, the BSCL Bicentennial Rolling Brigade followed on bicycles, rollerblades and foot. We are ready for the Fourth of July Parade!

In Memoriam

Barcroft has lost a gentle resident, Erv Fitchett, who lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Lori Fitchett, at # 204 S. Abingdon. Erv directly contributed to the safety and livelihood of our neighborhood in two ways. He was a strong advocate in contacting the County to extend the sidewalk on South Abingdon Street so that he and other neighbors could walk safely. Because of his illness, he could no longer drive; so he walked everywhere he could in order to grocery shop, visit friends and attend church. But he could certainly persist and that is what it took to complete the missing segment of sidewalk. Secondly, he was one of the two original Welcome Wavers to traffic coming into Barcroft on South Abingdon. He and another Barcroft neighbor, Kenny Harrell, who are the only two members of the Fraternal Association of Retired Technicians, or the "Old FARTS Club", sat on their lawn chairs each evening waving to traffic. Erv will be missed by all that knew him. May he rest in peace.
