President's Report: Everyone's Busy!
by Eric Harold
This May once again presents a slew of activities for the neighbors to participate in:
Sat. May 1 Barcroft Elementary School Spring Fair and Silent Auction
Sun. May 2 9th Annual Columbia Pike Blues Festival
Thurs. May 6 BSCL Meeting: Election of Officers and a host of other topics
Sat. May 8 Neighborhood Day Parade and BARBECUE/POT LUCK at the Community House
Sat. May 22 Barcroft Community Yard Sale
Neighborhood Day is Saturday May 8, and will feature the Neighborhood Day Parade at 2 pm. The parade goes along Wilson Boulevard from the Clarendon Metro stop to N. Wayne Street near the Courthouse. To celebrate this event, Barcroft will host a neighborhood barbecue and potluck from 5 pm until 8 pm at the Community House.
Please attend our next meeting, Thursday May 6, starting at 7:30 pm as usual. The program will include the election of BSCL officers, a vote to give neighborhood approval to a new sidewalk on S. 9th Street from Buchanan to the park entrance, and some neighborhood conservation plan discussion. See you all on May 6.
Neighborhood Garage Sale: Returning May 22
By popular demand, Barcroft is again holding a Neighborhood Garage Sale. Last month, I asked for feedback on the best date, and by a wide margin, May 22nd was chosen. Neighborhood church Our Savior Lutheran Church, located on Taylor Street, is also having a garage sale that day (see pg. 8 for details).
Last year, I spent a lot of time making a map of the neighborhood that really didn’t do a lot— the people who had the most traffic at their sales were the ones who posted signs along the road, so I strongly encourage everyone to get signs up throughout the neighborhood, pointing to their bargains. Neighbors on Abingdon worked together and that side of Barcroft definitely had the most shoppers.
I will put ads in the newspaper announcing a neighborhood sale— everyone is welcome to participate as they wish.
Last year it rained on us twice and was still lots of fun; I met many new neighbors walking around that day. Contact Christina Cavoli if you have any questions or suggestions: 271-0631 or editor@bscl.org.
The Parade is Coming!

Thursday, May 6th, 7:30 PM Barcroft Community House. Last Meeting of the Season! Come Partipate!
Annual Barcroft 4th of July Parade
Announcement from the Master of Ceremonies, Andrew Hunter: Mark your calendar and spread the word. This year’s 16th Barcroft 4th of July parade will be on the 5th of July (yes the 5th of July) starting in front of the community house at 10:00 sharp. Preparations are underway. The Magical Genie will be on hand at the community house after the parade to entertain and wow the children. Bring a dish for the picnic, build a float, ride a bike, march in the parade, dazzle the neighborhood with your talent or just watch on the sidelines. If you are interested in joining the Barcroft marching band (more below!) call Tom Palance at 703-979-8366. If you have any other questions or would like to volunteer please call Andrew Hunter at 703-979-8247.
A Note from our Esteemed Musical Director, Tom Palance:
I am looking for musicians for the Barcroft Band to walk around the block and play three songs at the parade. If you used to play in high school and would like to get your chops back up AND serve the community, this is your chance. I'll try to find you an instrument if you need one. I will give you music ahead of time so you’ll have plenty of time to work on it.
This is a great opportunity for high school or middle school kids to do something fun in the summer and earn community service points— I will gladly write a letter for your school. Two drummers who got their start playing in the Barcroft band about 10 to 12 years ago are now professional drummers, so you never know where this experience will lead! We will have two or three rehearsals sometime to be determined before the parade. If you are a pro, you are also welcome and encouraged to come help the others around you. You may also try your hands on a secondary instrument. Please spread the word to all and give my phone number to those interested. Thank you--Tom Palance 703-979-8366

Is your Fridge a Spendthrift? Saving Money, Saving the Environment: Getting the Most Out of Your Appliances: Do you hate seeing your electricity bills climb in the summer when the air conditioning is on? Do you wonder why your bills seem high during other parts of the year? In this free presentation we'll talk about how you can make your major appliances like air conditioners,
refrigerators, ovens, washers, dryers, and others work the most efficiently to save you money and help protect the environment at the same time. Arlington County's energy manager will be on hand with lots of useful tips and information. When: May 20th, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Where: Arlington Central Library auditorium, 1015 N Quincy Street
For more information call 703-228-6417. Sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Arlington County Office of Support Services, the Arlington County Department of Libraries, Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, and Potomac Overlook Regional Park.
More Garage Sales: The Women’s Home in Arlington (www.thewomenshome.com) provides a safe haven for women who are recovering from alcohol and drug abuse. Once a year they have a huge yard sale to benefit the home. This year it will be held on Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2. They are collecting “stuff” from donors to sell on those days -- furniture, sports gear, kitchenware, linens, artwork, books, toys, appliances, antiques, clothing, collectibles, etc.). They also need hangers and plastic and paper bags. It’s a perfect way to spring clean!
Because the home is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, United Way #8991 (National Capital Area & Combined Federal Campaign), all donations are tax-deductible – receipts are provided. Donations may be dropped off at the Home, beginning Monday, April 12: 1628 N. George Mason Drive, Arlington, VA 22205 (703/237-2822) – the big, brown, wooden house directly across from Virginia Hospital Center.
Please come to the sale on May 1 & 2. Lots of good stuff! Saturday (early) has the best pickings, but Sunday is half price day! Free parking is available at the hospital.
St. John’s celebrates Glencarlyn Day: St. John’s Episcopal Church will once again join in the celebration of Glencarlyn Day. Friday night June 4, St. John’s will be the site for the annual picnic. Saturday, members of the church will again provide hot dogs and soft drinks on 4th Street during the parade. The Glencarlyn Day Tea will be held from 1 to 3 pm in the Church Undercroft. The price of the tea is $20 per person. The Morning Guild Gift Table will also be open during the tea. All are welcome!
Invitation to Participate: The Arlington County Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Commission (EEOAC) would like to invite Barcroft neighbors to attend/participate in its proceedings. The EEOAC, an advisory body to the County Board and the County Manager, oversees the effective implementation of the County’s Equal Employment Opportunity policy. Each monthly meeting of the EEOAC typically features a presentation by the director of a County department on the status of that department’s equal employment opportunity efforts. Following the presentation, the director entertains questions from EEOAC commissioners and the public.
The EEOAC meets on the second Tuesday of every month (except July) at 7 p.m. in Conference Room A, #1 Courthouse Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. The next EEOAC meeting is scheduled for May 11, 2004.
Citizens are encouraged to attend meetings, but are advised to confirm the meeting schedule by calling Julius Evans at (703) 228-3474, as the schedule is subject to last minute changes.
Barcroft Spring Fair! Mark your calendars for the Barcroft PTA Spring Fair and Silent Auction, being held on Saturday, May 1, 11AM—3PM.
There will be a giant slide, moon bounce, mini-golf, face painting, various carnival games for prizes, piñatas, and cakewalks. We will also offer carnival type food choices, including burgers, ice cream, popcorn, and sno-cones. Everything is paid with tickets, so once you buy your tickets (50 cents ea. or $10 for 25), you can roam freely!
Don’t forget to check out the merchandise at the silent auction!
This is our third year to run the Spring Fair and Silent Auction together, and it's been a fun event for the whole neighborhood. I encourage you to come and support your neighborhood public school. The PTA uses the proceeds to directly support the school through funding for field trips, direct financial support for the teachers and various departments in the school, as well as RIF, social events such as the Halloween Party, schoolyard beautification, and after-school enrichment classes, to name a few. PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT US!!!!! Thanks for caring about the school in your neighborhood. The students are getting a top-notch education, in a loving, nurturing environment. For those of you with pre- school-aged kids, it's a perfect opportunity to experience the school's community up close.
Kudos to our own Randy Swart!!
Randy Swart, sometimes referred to as the “godfather of Barcroft,” has a long history of working to preserve what is important about Barcroft and living in Arlington. Randy currently maintains the BSCL website; next time you are at any Barcroft function, make sure to say “congratulations” to Randy for his commendation.
--excerpted from an article printed in the Sun Gazette
Two veteran civic activists were honored March 26 at the 88th annual Arlington County Civic Federation banquet. Organization president Dan Krasnegor was presented with the Journal Cup, while former president Randy Swart was named to the Order of Distinguished Meritorious Service.
Swart became only the 21st person honored with the Order of Distinguished Meritorious Service since it was first presented in 1936. He was honored for "exceptional service over a number of years," said Kimberly Johnson-Smith, chairman of the Civic Federation's executive committee. Swart served as Civic Federation president from 1998 to 2000. Among his current duties is maintaining the federation's extensive Web site.
County Board Chairman Barbara Favola used the dinner to formally proclaim March as "Civic Month" in Arlington County. She noted that the Civic Federation was "an integral part of the Arlington Way, and for that, we're all grateful."
The Arlington County Civic Federation is comprised both of neighborhood associations and of community-wide groups. The organization's membership now stands at an all-time high.
Traffic Calming Update
Trav Fick reports that the Traffic Calming measures for Barcroft should be completed by September with an evaluation of effectiveness after 6 months.
Therefore Wakefield should gets its raised crosswalks and edged parking lanes. Buchanan will have the edged parking lanes as well as bollards.
DPW is generally using yellow center lines with cushions to emphasize that drivers must remain on the right/proper side of the road when driving cushions but bollards will most likely still be installed in Barcroft as discussed throughout this past year.
Special Congratulations To ….
Baby Bulletin! Congratulations go out to our own BSCL President and wife, Eric and Annie Harold, on the birth of their son Calvin Louis on March 30. Calvin joins older sister, two-year old Liza Jane. Also arriving on the VERY SAME DAY was new Barcrofter Aidan Stebbens Foley, welcomed by parents Ed Foley and Helene Stebbens and three-year old sister Hannah.
Other announcements out there? Send them in— neighbors want to know! -- editor@bscl.org
Columbia Pike Blues Festival Returns May 2nd 2004
For 2004 the Arlington County Commuter Services Columbia Pike PikeRide presents the 9th Annual Columbia Pike Blues Festival. The D.C. area’s favorite blues festival returns to the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Dr. on Sunday, May 2nd, for six hours of the best blues in Washington. Pike Ride service will be free during the festival to get fans up and down the Pike with Metro connections at the Pentagon and Pentagon City.
Scheduled talent includes:
- Deanna Bogart, described by Downbeat Magazine as “an extravagant entertainer” headlines this year’s festival. The Maryland-based blues and boogie pianist/saxophonist combines the energy of 1930’s style boogie-piano blues with contemporary blues sounds.
- Barbara Martin brings what Blues Revue calls her, “…torch style grace” to the festival for a set with guitarist Mac Walter.
- Grammy and Wammie award winner Jon Carroll brings his keyboard artistry to the Columbia Pike Blues festival for the first time.
- The Washington Post says of Naked Blue, "Jennifer and Scott Smith clearly know just what they're doing...impeccably tuneful."
- Jeff Smith and his Band of Steves
- Steve McWilliams’s latest CD "ASTORIA" includes the hit “Upside Down” which enjoyed ten weeks on the XM RADIO independent chart. McWilliams’s music has been influenced by an adolescence spent in Virginia with its country influence and a lifetime of musical touring. ASTORIA is a breakthrough release for this singer-songwriter-instrumentalist.
As always, the festival is free to the public.
Neighborhood Day in Barcroft
Arlington will observe its 8th Annual Neighborhood Day on Saturday, May 8th. Several annual Neighborhood Day events have already been planned, including the Arlington Community Hero Awards, the Fort Myer Military Community Twilight Tattoo Ceremony, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s Walk for Animals, and, of course, the annual Neighborhood Day Parade.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and travel down Wilson Boulevard from the Clarendon Metro Station to the Courthouse area, followed by a multicultural concert at the end of the route.
In Barcroft, we will celebrate Neighborhood Day with our annual Barbeque/Potluck celebration at the Community House. In the past there has been incredible music as well— it is a great time to meet your neighbors and enjoy the day. Check the website and the listserve for more information.
For additional information on Neighborhood Day activities visit the Neighborhood Day Web site.
May BSCL Meeting
Next BSCL Meeting: Thursday, May 6th, 7:30 PM, Barcroft Community House, 800 Buchanan St.
The topics: Neighborhood Conservation Plan and the Park. BSCL NCAC Representative, David Michaelson, and BSCL President, Eric Harold, will engage Barcrofters in an initial discussion on updating the Neighborhood Conservation Plan. This is YOUR chance, as a long-time or new Barcrofter, to put your ideas into the new plan. We will convene a regular working group after the summer. Several park issues will be also be discussed, including the design for park landscaping and erosion along Donaldson Run.
The new BSCL officers will also be elected at the May meeting.
Look for some special treats at the May meeting!
Eating Well Along Columbia PikeWe Welcome Casa Blanca!!
I can happily recommend a new bakery that recently opened on Columbia Pike. Casa Blanca Bakery & Cafe, located at 5037 Columbia Pike (the CVS shopping plaza) offers an impressive array of pastries, cakes, and breads in a very artsy, coffee-house atmosphere. They also serve meals, a variety of Mexican, Salvadoran and other choices, at incredible prices ($3 gets you a full breakfast!) I took a group of friends and everyone was happy, and the café area is elegant and inviting. While there are already some great places to eat along the Pike, it is fantastic to see something so promising open up at our end. Go!
I’ve also heard good things about the new Thai restaurant, Bangkok 54, which opened in April— if you’ve been, feel free to contribute your own review….
Survey Says: Make Your Opinion Heard!!
Quick! Fill in the blank:
I will attend the next BSCL meeting when they are going to discuss ________________
As we plan for next year's BSCL meetings, the BSCL Board would like to have your opinion about what makes for good discussion topics. Use your imagination - we'll consider all suggestions!
Whether you are a home owner or a renter in our neighborhood, consider what is important to you about living in Barcroft— traffic? Parking? Schools? Parks? Do you worry about preserving the historic features of our area, or are you more focused on seeing the area transform into something new? Do you worry about public transportation or do you want to see more bike trails?
