The Barcroft News

September, 2004 - Volume 102, Issue 1

President’s Report

by Eric Harold

Welcome back from what was a pretty nice and enjoyably mild summer. We’ve got a busy year ahead of us, with many exciting things happening, beginning with our first monthly meeting on Thursday, September 2, at 7:30 pm. Topics are being determined as we speak, but rest assured it will be our normal, exciting meeting.

We had a fun summer. Andrew Hunter once again organized a spectacular 4th (5th) of July Parade and Picnic. A great parade along with good food, a magician for the kids and some of that loud rock and roll music for the kids in all of us were provided for the neighborhood to enjoy. I would be remiss if I did not thank our great judges—Pat Williamson, Mark Wigfield and Annette Osso (once again, the check’s in the mail. This is getting expensive…). We also had a very nice and well-attended National Night Out on August 3, coordinated and executed in fine fashion by Pat Williamson and her son Daniel.

In County news, the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board has denied the Hi Cue application for a liquor license. This has been a long-fought issue for Barcroft and our neighbors in South Arlington, and is a significant victory for the area. I know I’ve said this before, but please be sure to thank the County Board for their vocal support, especially Chris Zimmerman who testified at the hearing last April 19. County Attorney Stephen MacIsaac assisted in representing the opposition (us) in the hearing. Further, Delegates Al Eisenberg and Adam Ebbin also appeared and testified on our behalf. Our neighbors in Douglas Park really coordinated the whole effort through a lawyer who volunteered to represent us. Finally, Barcroft was well represented by Pat Williamson, who has been leading BSCL’s effort in this fight for years now, Randy Swart, and Elaine Squeri (apologies to anyone I may have missed). It was truly a group effort that has finally paid off for the years of tracking and hounding ABC.

Welcome back, folks, and hope to see you Thursday September 2 at 7:30 pm.

Another Memorable 4th of July

After organizing the 4th of July parade for 9 years now, I keep saying this will be the last one before I have to find someone to take the baton. Then, after all the preparations, I take a moment and I see the look of wonder and joy on faces during the parade, the packed community house full of laughing children, or feel that calm and pride during the national anthem and I realize what a pleasure it is to do this relatively simple act of service for the neighborhood I love. But what always amazes me is how many people come together to make it happen.

I want to thank everyone that made it possible. I want to thank Catharine Grace McGwire for being such a good sport as Parade Director and making the parade itself go so smoothly. I want to thank Sgt Marc Jenkins and Corporal Tom Binckley and the other officers of the Arlington Police Department. I want to thank the Arlington Fire Department. I never feel the parade is really going to happen until I see the fire truck show up. Thanks to Rand Bass for the reviewing stand set up. Thanks to Scott Peterson, Alan Dickerson, Phil Anderson, Brent Miller, Kenny Harrelson for cooking over a hot fire. Thanks to Bill Nehrke for the sound system. Thanks to Pat Williams and Chris Cavoli, Danny Malks, Randy Swart, Harriett Williams, Dellyne Periandri, Jill Herndon and others for set up and clean up. Thanks to Christina Cavoli for the newsletter and communications. Thanks to David Ariso and his fellow National Guardsmen. Thanks to the Uncle Sam and his daughter for driving the Grand Marshall car. Thanks to the Women’s club for the ice cream. Thanks to Carl Costanza and the Arlingtoons and their wonderful rendition of the National anthem. Thanks to all the parade participants and judges. Thanks to Mitchell Bass, Kyle and Salem for their music. Thanks to Tom Palance for organizing the Barcroft Marching Band. Thanks to Jack Turner for the signs. Thanks everyone.

Andrew Hunter

Karen is Back!

You may recall that during the most recent spate of gerrymandering of State Assembly districts our former State Assembly delegate Karen Darner's block was carved out and moved out of our Assembly district.

Now that Karen has retired from the Assembly, Barcrofters will be pleased to know that the General Assembly passed legislation in this year's session that returns that block to our district. The legislation was patroned by Del.Adam Ebbin (who succeeded Karen when she retired) and co-patron Al Eisenberg, our current Assemblyman. It will save the County an extra set of voting machines and 2 extra election workers at Barcroft precinct.

Welcome back Karen!

Volunteers Needed for Water Stewardship Program

Dear ACE Volunteers--

As an active members of the Arlington community, we are hoping you can help us with the launch of a new initiative - our Water Stewardship Program. In this program, we are creating neighborhood based teams who complete household actions to protect their local waterways. We are looking for team leaders to attend our next training, scheduled for Sunday, September 19.

We hope you will consider taking part in this exciting training and starting a team in your neighborhood. We are also looking for referrals of good candidates that you may know in your neighborhood, work place, school, or association.

Either myself, Annette Hanada with ACE, or Aileen Winquist with Arlington County Department of Environmental Services will be contacting you in the next few weeks to follow up. If you have any suggestions for us, please e-mail or call me.

St. John’s Hosts Friendship Sunday,
Offers Education Opportunities

St. John’s Episcopal Church, Glencarlyn, kicks off its program year on September 12 with Friendship Sunday. We invite everyone to come to at least part of our program that morning. Worship services are at 8 and 10; Christian Education for children and adults is at 9:00. We will be talking about mission and outreach to the world. After the 10:00 service, at 11:15, we hope you will join us in the undercroft for food and fellowship and for a look at some new programs we are offering both to parishioners and the community.

Sunday morning education through Christmas will include classes focusing on mission; stewardship of our time, talents and treasure; a series on “why we do what we do” in the Episcopal Church; and a study of the Apostles Creed, one of the basic belief statements of Christianity. We invite everyone to come and listen, ask questions and engage in dialog.

We also plan to begin two St. John’s book groups in October, one meeting in the morning and one in the evening. We’ll read and discuss mainstream books with spiritual themes of various sorts. We also plan a Bible Basics course.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, September 12. If you have any questions, please call the church office at 703-671-6834, ext. 22.

A Different View

In the last newsletter, a letter was printed by Steve Reiss and Scott Royal about their decision to leave this area in reaction to a law recently enacted by the Virginia legislature. Here, neighbor Bill Nehrke offers his counterpoint. The original letter can be read in the summer newsletter at www.bscl.org

The letter from our departing neighbors Steve and Scott was disturbing. It was sad in several ways.

First, the attack on our elected Virginia legislature was uncalled for. Here are two people attributing the motive for passing a bill to define marriage between one man and one woman as “hate inspired” is wrong. Our legislators are reflecting the values of an overwhelming majority of Virginians. They are reflecting the values of an equally overwhelming majority of Americans. Here is a case of a minute minority, 1-2% of our national population with a particular life style, trying to redefine marriage and wanting to impose their values on the majority.

Second, trying to claim that real consequences prohibit them from entering into contractual relationships as wills, powers of attorney, health care, etc. is false. This simply not true. They can enter into any contract they want to, but they can’t do it as a married persons. I had a friend who was a male. We decided that it would benefit both of us to buy a house together. We did. The title and all the documents were in two separate names as my current contract home mortgage and title is for my wife and I, and as most contracts are. The mortgage company was only interested in assuring that we were able to have the resources to pay the mortgage. Recently I had discussions with a friend, male, who indicated an interest to do some investing together. He had the money and I had the required expertise to get into business. There was nothing holding us back. Any two people, or more, can do this today as individuals, but not as a married persons. As for insurance any policy holder can name their beneficiary. Sexual preference is not dictated. Medical directives the same, you or I can name anyone we want in legal directives and documents.

Regarding hatred, I ask a question, which I believe most of us would ask. Have I showed personal hatred to Steve, Scott or other members of the gay community? Has anyone in Barcroft showed hatred? I want all readers to know I had a family member that was gay. He was still treated as a family member regardless of his choice. I also had a good friend who chose to adopt the gay lifestyle. He had a committed relationship. I tried to stay in touch with him until his untimely death at 41 a victim of AIDS. Sad because he was a fine singer and actor with a bad life style.

We can disagree on life style and choice of association but we need to respect each other as individuals and the values we have.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill Nehrke
