President’s Report

by Eric Harold

By Eric Harold

Thanks to all who came and celebrated the holidays with us at our December meeting. It was great to see all of the children there. Santa once again happened to be in the area (I believe he had stopped at Bob & Edith’s for a quick dinner), so he stopped in for a surprise appearance to the great joy of the children that were in attendance. The music was great: thanks to Randy Swart and Michael Nazaretz for organizing it. The entertainment festive (if I do say so myself) and the cookies, cakes, and other goodies were delicious. Thanks to Connie Sherman-Pollard for coordinating the food.

Join us for the first meeting of the New Year on Thursday January 6. The meeting will start at 7:30 pm as usual. The program is still in development, so stay tuned.

Watch for details in this newsletter on the annual(ish) spaghetti dinner. This is a great time, expertly organized by Tom and Lisa Palance. The food is great, all home cooked. We missed it last year, and look forward to renewing this tradition.

I hope you all have had a happy and safe holiday season, and wish you the best of New Years. See you all on January 6.

Barcroft School Needs Volunteers

As part of Barcroft Elementary School's efforts to meet the mandates the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Barcroft is beginning a new volunteer tutoring program, Barcroft Buddies, and is seeking help from community members.

Each week Barcroft Buddies will volunteer about an hour of their time (before, during, or after school or on Saturday mornings) to read and work with a child in need of help. Initially the program will target third and fifth graders and will focus on reading. No special skills are required and the school will provide training, support, materials or other assistance volunteers may need.

The school is holding two orientation sessions for those interested in exploring this opportunity on January 12 at 6:30 pm and on January 13th at 2 pm.

For further information, please call Suzanne Day or Phil Dolliff at 703 271-9383 or Barcroft's principal, Miriam Hughey-Guy at 703 228-5838.

Have you renewed your membership?

By Peg Lefebvre

By now you may have found the Membership Application insert in this issue. The original was in the September Newsletter.

So, if you put off sending in your dues and no longer know where the form may be, we are enclosing it again.

Of course, if you are new to the neighborhood, now is a good time to join.

If you aren't sure about your status, contact Peg Lefebvre, the Membership Secretary, Peg@bscl.org or 703-521-0184. She can quickly tell if you have renewed or not.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Emergency Management Classes Available

The Arlington County Office of Emergency Management is offering the following classes to members of the community who are interested in emergency management. There is no need to register beforehand. Both classes will be held in the County Board Room located on the 3rd floor at 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Ample parking is available in the underground garage and is free. Lessons Learned from Arlington's Deployment to Hurricane Charlie: From August 20 through September 8, 2004, Arlington County sent a total of 15 employees (divided into two teams) to assist Charlotte County, Florida in dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Charley. Hurricane Frances struck the state during the second team's assignment. Members of the Arlington CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) who were hired by FEMA to assist the victims of the Florida hurricanes this year will also present their experiences and lessons learned. The class will last no longer than 2 hours. It will be held: January 12, 7:00 p.m.

    Eating Along the Pike

First Thai Square restaurant was featured as a "local gem" in Gourmet magazine. Now our very own Bangkok 54 gets a great write up in the Washington Post Magazine food section by Tom Sietsema. He gives Bangkok 54 a three star excellent rating (and he does not hand out three stars very often!). If you haven’t yet visited, plan to go soon: It's without a doubt the most elegantly outfitted restaurant in the corridor. The service is great and the food reputed to be some of the best Thai around.

The address is 2919 Columbia Pike, in the bank of retail bays adjacent to the Cinema-n-Drafthouse. There is parking in the back. Tell your friends!

    Kenmore School Needs Props

We are planning A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM for a January production at Kenmore. We are hoping to find old artificial Christmas trees that we can alter for our show. If you have one stuck in your attic or basement and don't intend to use it, please consider donating it to us. We are also looking for artificial flowers and greenery, barrels, crates, and sheets for "Midsummer."

For our February production of the musical, ANNIE, we need costumes, including coats and shoes, for our 1933 orphans, police officer, and adults. Please think of us as you sort through stored items. Since Franklin Roosevelt appears in the play, we would also love to find a wheelchair! Please contact Dottie Lydon, (703) 228-6800 or email dorothy_lydon@apsva.us.

    Master Gardener Training Offered

The Master Gardener Training Program for residents of Arlington County and Alexandria begins January 13 at the Fairlington Community Center in Arlington. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 31.

Participants receive training in practical gardening and landscaping techniques that preserve and protect the environment. The program is offered by the Arlington County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension in cooperation with the City of Alexandria.

For more information and an enrollment form, call the Virginia Cooperative Extension office at 703-228-6426 or e-mail huttonj@vt.edu.
