The Barcroft NewsApril 2006 - Volume 103, Issue 8President's Reportby Pat Williamson Join us on Thursday, April 6, at 7:30 pm, for the regular monthly meeting of the Barcroft School and Civic League at the Community House. Thanks to neighbor Shirley Gay, we will enjoy a presentation by Laura Beatty, Propagation Chair of the Potowmack Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society. Ms. Beatty will tell us about native plants that we can successfully use to replace the invasive ivy plants that abound in Arlington. This will be a great preparation for the May 4 meeting where we will hear form Jan Ferrigan, of Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension Service, who will tell us how we can work together to rid our homes and parks of the ivy that is killing many trees" and other plants. We celebrate the beginning of the implementation of traffic calming on Pershing Drive and the start of planning for traffic calming measures for S. Taylor Street between 9th and 4th Streets. Making more of our streets safer from speeding vehicles is such a wonderful thing.

Maps of Barcroft noting some of our neighborhood treasures will be posted on the Arlington County Walkabout website and folks from all around will be welcome to meet at the Community House and try out the route. Sign Up For Arlington AlertThere was a major water main break on the DC side of the Chain Bridge recently that left many Arlingtonians totally without water for hours and others with minimal water pressure. Please Note:1) It's important to keep extra water on hand at all times. At a minimum, you should have at least one gallon of drinking water per person per day for three days in your emergency preparedness supplies. That means you'd need six gallons of water for two people ... and more if you have pets or small children. That total does not include the extra water needed to flush toilets, clean, cook, etc. 2) If you have text messaging capabilities via a computer, cell phone, pager or PDA, you should sign up for Arlington's free emergency notification service called Arlington Alert. Those who subscribe received notification shortly after 3 pm yesterday regarding the water main break and subsequent messages provided details about boiling water, etc. Sign up now at http://www.arlingtonalert.com/
Prepare now for peace of mind later

Songsters ReturnVolcano orange, ruby red, deep indigo blue, sunflower yellow - are these the new "in" decorating colors for 2006? No! They're some of the words you might use to describe the gorgeous, little migratory birds, called warblers that live here only during the warm months of the year.Beginning in late April und lasting through May, hundreds of new voices will join the dawn chorus in our woodlands as these birds arrive from their winter home in Central and South America to announce the arrival of spring. Some are just passing through on their way further north.
Others will stay here in Arlington where they will nest and raise young. All of them will benefit if you provide the four basic elements of habitat in your yard. Food, water, sheltered places to rest and escape from the weather and predators, and places to raise young are critical to the survival of these magical creatures during this exhausting twice a year trip!
Help Keep Barcroft BeautifulBarcroft sidewalks are vibrant und full all year long with pedestrians making their way through the neighborhood. You have probably been out the beating a path yourself in the past weeks. Did you trip over the many unwanted copies of the Examiner?Don't let your yard become victim to this media barrage. If you scurry out in the early morning to retrieve your copy of the Washington Post like many neighbors do, leaving The Examiner to fend for itself, make a simple phone call to cancel the paper. Save pedestrians the trouble of stepping over it.
