Barcroft's Finest Season

Do you ever think of moving to a place with a lower cost of living? Less traffic? Warmer winter weather? Family owned pharmacy in the middle of town? A metro stop less than a mile away?

What stops you? Is it the easy access to Four Mile Run? The historic community house? The relatively affordable housing cost in South Arlington? Your job? Your family?

Maybe... but I suspect it is something more. I suspect that you, like almost every Barcroft resident, can't move away because you know you will not find a finer neighborhood Fourth of July parade on this side of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

So you stay.

Every year your anticipation grows for this magical time of year. You spend the month of June dreaming about your parade entry. You search for the

perfect recipe for the potluck lunch ... one that won't swelter in the 10 AM July heat. You come to the community house early to get the best place in the parade marching order. Your neighbor sets out his lawn chair early to beat the crowd of spectators angling for the best spot.

You are not disappointed. Again, this year, the bicycles and tricycles are decorated to the hilt. The wagons are overflowing with red, white and blue neighborhood children. Uncle Sam is cruising in the convertible sporting his authentic white beard. The beads are flying through the thick summer air like it was Mardi Gras. The pregnant ladies dance in the street with a patriotic mid-drifts.

You march in time with your wonderful community and you know that this is Barcroft's finest season.

KUDOS

Barcrofter Danny Cackley sang the National An-them with the Washington-Lee High School Madrigals at the May 3rd Washington Nationals v. Florida Marlins baseball game. Fans stopped them on their way off the field and told them it was the best they had heard. Danny is a senior at Washington-Lee High School.

Congratulations to Barcrofter and recent Washington-Lee High School graduate, Francesca Ioffreda, who was awarded the Donn and Michael Marston Scholarship through the Arlington Community Foundation Scholarship program. Francesca will attend Claremont McKenna College in the Fall.

Kudos to Scott Brinitzer and his award winning gardening and lawn keeping crew. They work tirelessly and effectively to keep our Community House grounds growing and vibrant. Did you see the. huge pile of mulch the county delivered this spring? If not, it is probably because this dynamic group distributed the mulch throughout the garden almost as soon as it arrived. Take a stroll through the garden the next time you pass by. Look at each of the well cared for plants. It will calm your soul and lift your spirits. As you walk on the grass, note that it is trimmed by another group of amazing neighborhood volunteers.

Are your neighbors or your family doing some-thing spectacular? Let your neighbors know. Alert the Barcroft Newsroom. Email: editor@bscl.org

Goodbye to the Harris/ Lindenauer family

You will be deeply missed in barcroft.

Thanks for being exceptional neighbors.

Barcroft Elementary's Newest Classroom is a Musical Garden

Students at Barcroft Elementary are growing herbs, tomatoes, beans, corn, flowers, budding performers and musicians at Barcroft's Outdoor Classroom and Musical Garden. Parent volunteers from the PTA, along with Arlington Public School Employees, built a gazebo for outdoor classes and meetings, planted vegetable and flower beds, installed a selection of outdoor musical instruments and built a small performance stage. The funds to create the garden were provided by grants from Arlington County's Park Enhancement Grant program and from Lowe's Educational Grant program, in addition to the PTA.

Individual gardens for different grade levels are filled with herbs, vegetables and flowers. The gar-den also includes a "Critter Garden", with animal-named plants; and an "Alphabet Garden", with plants that start with the letters from A to Z. The Musical Garden features five Contrabass Chimes, an Imbarimba (combination xylophone and African kalimba), and six hand drums. Parents, local gardeners, school staff, teachers and students work together to maintain the garden, and plan for the future.

We invite you to enjoy playing' the instruments, investigating the plants and vegetables, and sitting in the Gazebo - but remember that this is a school and part of our neighborhood. As with any new installation, there has been some unauthorized use and some minor damage. We ask that you help every-one observe the following rules:

  • The Gardens, along with the playground and playing fields, close at sunset.
  • Use hands only on the drums. Use mallets or hands on the chimes and imbarimba. Do not climb or sit on them!
  • Enjoy sitting in the gazebo, but please do not stand on the benches or jump over the railing.
  • Most importantly, enjoy the plants and flowers? and play the instruments!
Please respect our neighbors by restricting your enjoyment to daylight hours, and by reporting any unauthorized use to the Arlington County Police non-emergency number. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please share them with Bar-croft's principal, Mrs. Hughey-Guy at 703-228? 5838.

Can you translate English to Spanish?
Barcroft Elementary Needs You as a Volunteer!

The Barcroft PTA is looking for someone to provide translation from English to Spanish for our monthly (sometimes bi-monthly) newsletter. You would be emailed the articles and then send them to the newsletter editor for formatting into the final form. If you think you might be interested, or you have any questions about the process or the work involved, please call Carol Hunter at 703-979-8247, or email her at cahunter@erols.com.

Signs Celebrate the Chesapeake

Have you seen the new signs in our park at Columbia Pike and Four Mile Run? There are three environmental signs about water quality and the Chesapeake Bay. One talks about how our storm drainage runs into Four Mile Run, and how it degrades the water quality to undrinkable. It advises you not to swim in Four Mile Run. The second covers the geography of the stream. The third is all about its history. The signs are in a temporary location while we decide how we want the park improved. They are be-side the W&OD trail, just above the Pike.

Come down and take a look.

Enjoy a Summer treat on the Trail

Bianca is Back!

Our Snowcone Lady has returned to the Pike, with her stand near the Barcroft Shopping Center.

Her name is Bianca, and she returned to us after finishing her year as a school bus driver. Besides serving up tasty snow cones in hot weather, she improves the atmosphere in that part of the park. She cleans up any trash her customers drop, too.

Customers usually stay and enjoy the snowcones as they chat merrily on warm summer afternoons and evenings. The next time the summer beckons you out, grab your neighbors, come down to the W&OD trail and enjoy a snowcone together.

The County hopes some day to encourage the redevelopment of the shopping center with a cafe on the park end to serve trail users. In the meantime, we can enjoy Bianca and her snow cones.
